WooCommerce store takeovers: finish and fix your WordPress shop

WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a shop, adding products, variations, carts, orders and an admin for fulfilment. Stores layer on payment gateways such as Stripe or PayPal, shipping zones and methods, tax settings, and extensions for subscriptions, bookings or product add-ons. Recent versions offer block-based cart and checkout pages and store orders in dedicated tables known as High-Performance Order Storage.

Common states at takeover

Unfinished stores often have product data imported in an inconsistent format, with variations missing prices or stock. Shipping rules cover the home country but not international orders, and tax is set up only partly. Checkout may be customised through code that conflicts with the block checkout, or a caching plugin serves cached cart pages so totals go wrong. Order emails sometimes never arrive because the site has no proper mail sending configured.

What to include

State how many products and variations you sell in rough terms, the gateways and shipping carriers you need, and the countries you ship to. List the extensions you rely on and whether their licences are current. If the store is already trading, say so, and note any stock or accounting system it syncs with. The production readiness checklist helps you catch missing backups or monitoring before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Can a developer test checkout without charging real cards?

Yes. Most payment gateways for WooCommerce, including Stripe and PayPal, offer a test or sandbox mode. Testing should happen on a staging copy so real customers never see test orders.

My store gets orders already. Is a takeover risky?

It needs care, not avoidance. Ask the developer to work on staging, schedule changes for quiet hours and keep a recent backup, especially of the orders table, before each release.
