Native Android app takeovers: finish a Kotlin or Java Android app

Native Android apps are written in Kotlin, or Java for older codebases, and built with Gradle in Android Studio. Interfaces use Jetpack Compose or XML layouts, often alongside Jetpack libraries for navigation, lifecycle and data storage. Releases are uploaded to Google Play Console as Android App Bundles and signed through Play App Signing with a separate upload key.

Typical takeover states

Gradle is the usual first obstacle: an Android Gradle Plugin version the current Android Studio no longer supports, build scripts mixing Groovy and Kotlin DSL, and libraries pulled from repositories that have since closed. Google Play requires apps to target a recent API level, so an older app may be blocked from updating until its target SDK is raised and permission or background behaviour changes are handled. Half-migrated code, part Compose and part XML, is common.

What to include

Say whether the app is on Play and which track it uses, the minimum Android version you support, and whether it uses Play App Signing. List features remaining and any Google services involved, such as Maps, Firebase Cloud Messaging or Play Billing. Quote policy or rejection emails exactly. The dependency freshness check helps show how much upgrade work sits under the feature list.

Frequently asked questions

I lost the key used to sign my Android app. Is it over?

Not if the app is enrolled in Play App Signing. Google holds the app signing key, and the account owner can request an upload key reset through Play Console. Apps outside Play App Signing are much harder to recover, so mention which applies.

How do I add a developer to Google Play Console?

In Play Console, open Users and permissions and invite them by email with access only to the apps and actions they need. Keep the owner role for yourself or your company.
